SMOOKY (Electronik Weed Crew, Mercurochrome, Null // Switzerland)
Smooky is part of a Swiss collective called Mercurochrome, whose aim is to promote the electronic culture on all levels. Mercurochrome finds its origins in the multiplicity of each of its members’ experiences, gained over the latter half of the nineties, coming together. This fusion resulted in their infamous parties held in the cities and the countryside of the Juraissan, events which drew from Hip Hop culture as well as the Industrial resulting in the exploration of the more radical margins of sound. This party spirit, lacking in many such experiments, provided the impetus and reason to explore further, pushing the boundaries of 'sound experience' to the limit without neglecting the fact that people are out to enjoy themselves.
It was this raw, honest energy that drew Jason Leach (aka Subhead) to the project. Inspired by the 'highly organised mayhem' that is a Mercurochrome event and the high standard of Mercurochrome's artists, Leach felt that this should be experienced by a wider audience. He, alongside the Swiss producers Fugo, Michele Fasano, Smooky, Ki-Yota and Smees, formed the label’s core, later bringing in friends Nino-Fight and Steady-P. Smooky went on to found the closely related label Electronik Weed Crew along with Smees, Nino Fight and Ki Yota, which together with Mercurochrome became the pillar-stone of this distinctive, riotous dancefloor-destroying Swiss sound.
Smooky the producer has made an important contribution to the Swiss scene through several EPs and compilation appearances. However, it is his deejaying which brings him to Substance on this occasion – expect to hear the Juraissan take on electronics and a whole lot more.

Based in Glasgow, influenced by classic Detroit techno & UK electronica and, inspired by such subjects as imperialism, propaganda, psychology, political ideologies (and their misuses in the social structure and culture), Galaxian’s uncompromising approach and non conformist attitude deliver a sound which is at once reflective and forward thinking, encompassing dark atmospherics, menacing basslines fused with full on, mind warping electro and funked up grooves of the past, present and future.
Galaxian's sound is set to continue it's spread far and wide. His first release came only last year on Black Montanas, which has been closely followed by appearances on his own Doppelganger Recs, Solar One and Militant Science, labels which feature the likes of Millimetric, Paul Blackford, Smashback, Franck Sarrio (Bunker) and Manasyt. The future looks highly promising, with impending releases on Detroit’s Deadlock Records (an EP with Boris Divider) and Transient Force (which features artists including Drexcyian DJ Stingray and Luke Eargoggle), and more still in the pipeline …
