Telefunken presents MARK FARINA (Mushroom Jazz, Om Recordings, San Francisco)

Mark Farina is widely regarded as one of the best and certainly most popular djs in the world of house music right now. His career to date spans nearly 2 decades from growing up in Chicago in the late 80s and listening to early house music, buying records recommended to him by friend, Derrick Carter, to making the first ever ambient house record “Mood” which he co-produced with Chris Nazuka for Kevin Saunderson’s KMS label in ’89. It was obvious Mark had a talent to match his passion.

By the early ‘90s, Mark’s attention began to wander slightly from the purist forms of house into a more organic, jazz and hip-hop flavoured sound. By ‘92 he’d compiled and mixed a run of mix-tapes which he titled Mushroom Jazz. These tapes became incredibly popular with several volumes selling out of 500+ copies each. That year also saw the launch of the now legendary Mushroom Jazz Club in San Francisco which within 3 years was drawing crowds of 600-700 people every Monday night. The mid 90’s acid jazz boom saw his status as a pioneer begin to grow as he effortlessly fused classic Chicago sounds with the newer jazzy styles of the west coast producers.

The Mushroom Jazz Club eventually closed its doors forever and was reborn as a series of mix cds for Om Records. Mark has also released several other mix CDs including “Seasons”, a guest mix for United DJs of America, Live at Om which he recorded with Derrick Carter as well as his debut artist album “Air Farina” released in 2003. Since then he’s done another mix album for the House Of Om series, Live In Tokyo (2007), last year’s “Fabric 40”, and last autumn saw the release of the 6th instalment of Mushroom Jazz.

Telefunken are absolutely ecstatic to be bringing Mark back to Edinburgh for the first time since he played at the legendary Tribal Funktion night at The Venue back in 1996. This is gonna be a party of epic proportions and we sincerely hope you can join us!
